St. Augustine’s Anglican Church Addition

Categories: Educational / Institutional, Artistic Use of Masonry

Address: 411 11 St S

Year: Lethbridge

Date Completed: January 21, 2016

This 8-foot one-storey addition created a more welcoming, spacious, and accessible entrance. The original west façade was dominated by a forbidding two-storey brick wall typical of 1950s design; our addition honours the façade’s strength while softening its effect.
Copper-coloured metal siding creates a dialogue between old and new, extending past the 1950s building to connect an education wing and beloved courtyard to the main church.
The key feature of the addition is a brick wall the same length as the original ’50s wall. Slightly taller than the addition, it stands out as a direct reference to the original design. Breaking up the length of the new façade, it lends visual weight to the slender and light addition. Its careful placement also ensures that the relocated stained glass windows remain lined up with the church’s centre aisle. This feature wall, and the new elevator tower, continue the 5-course common bond of the original masonry in a subtly different brick.
Church users now encounter the original brick façade inside the building. The addition also uses the brick wall of the bell tower as a devotional wall in the prayer room.
