Brick and stone masonry, Yankee Hill Medium Iron Sport Brick and Limestone, help define a Nordic contemporary aesthetic. With the use of masonry, cedar, timber, and concrete, the front facade uses asymmetry and alignment to create a dynamic façade.
A masonry brick wall in a running bond extends from ground level to the roof at the front of the home. It is interrupted at the main storey by a latticed ‘hit and miss’ brick detail and then interrupted by a square window above at the second level. Both the lattice and the window have limestone bands defining each. Further, the brick beside the window protrudes slightly adding a subtle detail.
The front wall is also back lit, creating a lantern like effect to both to the exterior and interior of the home.
Brick was utilized to anchor the home front and back. The ‘hit and miss’ wall creates interest at the front façade but more importantly helps mitigate the views into the home, which is always a challenge, while simultaneously allowing light to pass freely into the home. For the interior there is a similar effect as it gives interior vistas something to end on while still allowing the home occupants a connection to the exterior.
The location of the brick fireplace at the rear of the home helps define an exterior sitting area and creates privacy. It also allows our spatial separation calculations to increase the size of windows facing the side property line allowing more light into the home.
