Address: 1316 Prospect Avenue SW

Year: Calgary

Date Completed: April 17, 2013

This two-storey historic home was originally built in 1913 in Calgary’s historic community of Mount Royal. In a previous renovation many of the original sandstone elements were replaced with precast, and cast, concrete. In 2013 we worked with the current owner to re-establish the historical character of the home, while updated the interior plan, largely with the use of new brick and sandstone masonry.

Due to deterioration, the only original brick is on the east exterior wall. The restoration/renovation involved skillfully blending four bricks, extending the front porch, adding new front yard landscaping, as well as a new rear yard garage. The front facade, driveway side, and rear brick walls were all redesigned in the original character to accommodate a modern floor plan. The porch columns were doubled, sandstone bases and capitals were added as the former columns lacked both base and capital detailing. New sandstone balustrades, coping along with new windowsills (too deteriorated to repair) finish the front porch. All new sandstone is hand cut from Spanish Sandstone as it closely resembles the original Paskapoo Sandstone. The landscaping involves two stepped brick retaining walls with rowlock capping and sandstone caps adjacent the stairs. The chimneys were re-pointed and capped with sandstone and copper shrouds to hide the new metal exhausts. A new brick and sandstone exterior fireplace extend the shoulder seasons while integrating into the home’s historic aesthetic.
