The masonry design of the building features natural rundle stone sourced from a local quarry, meticulously applied on all elevations as a full-bodied brick. The front facade of the structure exhibits a distinctive saw-tooth step, and the chosen masonry serves a crucial role as the vertical element that not only visually anchors each step but also contributes weight, texture, and support to the extensive roof spans.
The coursing of the stone is deliberately designed to create a sense of solidity, presenting a continuous and uninterrupted visual flow that complements the overall architectural design. This deliberate choice in material extends beyond the building itself, harmonizing with the surrounding mountain landscape. The use of rundle stone seamlessly integrates with the natural environment, and this connection is further emphasized as the material extends into landscaping elements such as planter bed retaining walls. The thoughtful incorporation of local stone not only grounds the building, but also establishes a cohesive relationship between the built structure and its picturesque mountainous surroundings, fostering a sense of unity and continuity in the overall design and within the Town of Banff.
