OCEAN PEARL SLAB FIREPLACE

Categories: Single Family Residential, Artistic Use of Masonry

Address: Township Road 534

Year: Spruce Grove, Alberta

Date Completed: July 29, 2022

Canadian natural stone panels were custom designed on this one of a kind fireplace project. The client/builder used substantial wood framing and welded steel support systems to provide a support system for this 6 TON stone package.
Individual stones ranged in size from 36″ x 12″ to 48″ x 24″. Specific width and and lengths of full stone panels (2-4″ thick) were designed to fit together within vertical steel accents as joints. 2 face finishes and textures were incorporated into the design – ‘Cut and Flamed’ and ‘Naturally Split’ alternating textures create depth, colour, and texture variances across the fireplace face. The individual ‘Naturally Split’ stones had edges that were hand pitched on site to create depth and pillowing, while enhancing the natural quartz veining running through this metamorphic slate from Vancouver Island.
The engineered steel clip and kerf program was used for the hand laid installation method – Epoxied steel clips for mechanical fastening, with welded steel base for structural support.
