Foundation Restoration St. Patrick Church

Categories: Commercial Building, Restoration

Address: 14620 146 Ave SE

Year: Calgary

Date Completed: October 22, 2023

Photo 1- This shows deterioration and crumbling of original foundation.
Photo 2- Sill plate had to be replaced. General contractor put shims on original foundation so he could install new windows. That made it difficult for me because there could be no settling. Otherwise windows would not open and close. I had to rebuild the foundation in short sections.
Photo 3- New sandstone blocks for foundation were broken down using plug and feathers. Then the face had to be pitched to remove the drill holes.
Photo 4- New foundation stones using lime mortar when original stones were removed, they had been laid directly on the ground, which by this time had been very compacted. I was very careful not to disturb the ground and anything loose I used a brush to remove. I laid stones first they still have to be pointed.
Photo 5- Because this was a historic site, I had to reuse as much of the original foundation as could be salvaged. Sometimes only half of the stone could be reused and sometimes it was just dust. As per instructed by the provincial government.
Photo 6- St. Patrick’s Church originally built in 1905 Foundation restored by Gordon White 2023.
