Calgary Cancer Centre – Light Wells

Categories: Educational / Institutional, Artistic Use of Masonry

Address: 3395 Hospital Drive NW

Year: Calgary

Date Completed: January 1, 2021

The Arthur J.E. Child Comprehensive Cancer Centre was designed reminiscent of two figures embracing, the exterior form offers an iconic symbol of hope, while the lower podium welcomes a human-scaled arrival experience and intuitive wayfinding. The entrance establishes a strong visual connection to the building’s heart: a beautifully landscaped central courtyard surrounding a sacred space. Access to light throughout was prioritized, including in the basement (vault) areas which draw in daylight with light wells and clerestories.

Three uniquely designed light wells are featured with Natural Rundle Stone, designed to absorb radiation and beautify the space in cancer treatment.
