Rose Diamond at Stanley Park
Categories: Commercial Building, Educational / Institutional
Address: 350 Riverdale Ave SW
Year: Calgary
Date Completed: March 4, 2017
The vision for Rose Diamond at Stanley Park was to build a signature facility for Little League baseball in Stanley Park – Calgary’s most iconic setting. The diamond will be used to develop superior citizens – a place where young players will learn the values of citizenship, discipline, teamwork, and well-being. It will be a place to pursue the Little League virtues of Character, Courage and Loyalty while emphasizing the application of Effort and Learning to overcome Mistakes and adversity. At Rose Diamond, we will honour the game.
The donor is a geologist, so when we looked at options for the masonry, using real stone became a key part of our vision. The high quality masonry speaks to the vision of a durable, authentic place for families to experience the great sport of baseball. Looking at the options, we selected Tyndall Stone as it is Canadian, is aesthetically suited to the location, and has a colour palette that matches the tree trunks and shrubbery. Tyndall Stone is durable stone that also has interesting fossils and texture.
Since its completion in 2017, Rose Diamond has hosted hundreds of baseball games, including the 2022 Little League Canadian Championship tournament, held on the 50th anniversary of the construction of the original diamond in 1962. Many families who visit the park comment on the incredible masonry work, and kids and adults alike enjoy finding fossils embedded in the stone.
