Grand Prairie Composite High School Replacement

Categories: Educational / Institutional, Structural Masonry Design

Address: 11202 104 Street

Year: Grande Prairie

Date Completed: April 30, 2021

In September 2017, Alberta Infrastructure selected their architect to design the new 16,683 m2, 1600 student, Grande Prairie Composite High School. The project’s construction cost was $55.6 million and was designed and tendered in 16 months and constructed in 25 months. The project was granted substantial completion in January 2022 and ready for students by September 2022.

Throughout the design process, the design team was challenged to push the boundaries of traditional school-building design. “Flexibility”, “Adaptability”, “Sustainability”, “Functionality”, “Active Learning” and “21st Century” teaching concepts, along with the desire to provide students with a “Post-Secondary feel” became key objectives and “drivers” throughout the design process. Within this framework the Team regularly focused on making all school spaces (including corridors) “interactive”.

The new Grande Prairie Composite High School is prominently located within view of the new Grande Prairie Hospital and Northwestern Polytechnic (formerly Grande Prairie Regional College) near the centre of the City. The new school is now a focal point within the hub of the community. The “tired” 1960’s building has been replaced with a new modern, attractive facility. The City and School Jurisdiction is proud of the facility and sees this it as an inspiring sign of increased Community growth , prosperity, and student learning.
