Uniquely located between a community park to the north and a renowned university to the south, Capella is a purposeful enclave perched on a generous amenity-rich space surrounded by one of Calgary’s most comprehensive mixed-use communities. Named after Capella, a navigational star visible year-round from Calgary, this project aimed to serve as a focal point and landmark for the community, guiding people through and around the site in a manner that is both elevated and approachable. Capella is the place people choose for their next chapter. Highlighting the value of the site’s natural context in relation to the project’s purpose, the landscape design aimed to reflect these values and create a purposeful environment for these next-chapter residents. This premise was decidedly put together through the artistry of masonry.
The architectural design aimed to create a refined selection of high-quality material finishes that offered a crisp, clean ‘new slate’ ambience to the build, while still applying the practicality of a durable, soundproof, and fire-resistant element that stood out from the remainder of the units in the district. As a space meant to reflect an elevated new beginning, it was vital that the masonry used was equally reflective of a structurally sound foundation.
