The Edmonton City Hall Plaza and Fountain renewal seamlessly integrates urban design and landscape, where masonry transforms one of Edmonton’s most crucial public squares. The design pays homage to the city’s history while providing a contemporary, accessible, and welcoming space.

Central to this transformation is a granite-surfaced pool, fountain, and ice rink, showcasing craftsmanship and a thoughtful selection of granite tiles. The team curated three red granite tiles—Stony Creek, Polychrome, and Wausau Red—alongside three grey granite counterparts, including Saint Sebastian Grey and two textures of Atlantic Grey, honoring the original granite and infusing a modern flair into the plaza. The juxtaposition of granite creates a visual tapestry that adds depth and character, transforming the plaza into a unique urban space.

The meticulous technical design extended to the granite detailing, ensuring pool, fountain, and ice rink systems are hidden. Custom-fabricated granite serves as tactile warning and visual acuity markers. The granite surface also conceals hidden fountain jets and a new perimeter gutter system, contributing to the plaza’s seamless aesthetic.

The result is a sophisticated urban space that respects history while adapting to contemporary needs. The granite creates a dynamic surface responding to the ever-changing nature of the plaza, embodying a versatile canvas for events. This adaptability ensures the plaza remains inclusive, versatile, and welcoming.
