Spider Site – Calgary, Alberta
Categories: Commercial Building
Address: 3001 – 14 Street SW
Year: Calgary
Date Completed: December 31, 2019
The “Spider Site” project gets its unique name from the beloved “spider beetle” that once sat prominently at the front of the former “Mechanics Garage” occupying the site for more than 30 years. A friendly and welcoming mascot to the communities of South Calgary and Altadore. This new mixed-use urban retail/medical office project replaces the Mechanic Garage with a beautiful McKinley Burkhart designed four-story building, strategically situated at the corner of Premier Way (29th Avenue) on busy 14 Street SW. Although the “spider car” has moved down the street, subtle nods to its history still exist around the property, such as the three metal spiders located on the parking lot’s back wall. The building is anchored with a custom cut, honed Indiana limestone base and plinth. A tumbled red brick was chosen for the exterior which gives a reclaimed look to the brick façade. The brick is highlighted with soldier coursing. Brick was also used in various locations throughout the interior of the building.
